India Women's Hockey Team Script History With Best World Cup Finish Since 197

The Indian women's hockey team has closed out its FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign in style, defeating world No. 5 Germany 3-1 in the fifth-place classification match in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The win secures India's best finish at the tournament since the very first edition of the Women's World Cup back in 1974, when the team finished fourth.

A slow start, a stunning finish

The contest against Germany was a tight, goalless affair for the first 30 minutes, with the higher-ranked Germans enjoying more of the early possession and territory. But India's defence held firm, setting the stage for a dramatic turnaround after the break.

The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute, when a swift move ended with a composed finish to put India ahead. The lead was doubled almost immediately after, as India converted from a penalty corner to make it 2-0. India continued to press and struck again in the 47th minute with a well-worked finish from close range, effectively putting the result beyond doubt. Germany pulled a goal back late on, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as India's defence stood tall to close out a memorable 3-1 win.

A campaign to remember

This wasn't a one-off performance — it was the fitting end to an impressive tournament for India, who finished with two wins, three draws, and just a single defeat across six matches. Their only loss came against defending champions Netherlands, while they managed to hold their own against higher-ranked opposition, drawing with China, England, and Australia along the way. India's most emphatic result of the tournament came against South Africa, whom they beat 6-1 for their most prolific World Cup win.

While a semi-final berth narrowly slipped away, finishing fifth is a significant marker of progress for Indian women's hockey on the world stage — matching the achievement of the trailblazing 1974 squad that reached fourth place at the inaugural edition.



Eyes on the Asian Games

The timing of this result couldn't be better. India now heads into next month's Asian Games in Japan with real momentum and confidence, having just proven they can compete with — and beat — some of the best teams in the world. A strong showing at the Asian Games would carry extra significance too, with a title-winning campaign offering a pathway toward direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
