Can India Qualify for the WTC 2027 Final? Breaking Down Their Chances
India’s road to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2027 Final has become increasingly challenging, but the door is far from closed.
The Indian team is currently sitting fifth in the WTC 2025–27 standings with a points percentage of 48.15% after nine Tests. With only the top two teams qualifying for the final, India will need a strong finish to their campaign.
India’s Remaining WTC Schedule
India still have nine Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle:
- 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka – 2 Tests (Away)
- 🇳🇿 New Zealand – 2 Tests (Away)
- 🇦🇺 Australia – 5 Tests (Home)
Their immediate challenge will be Sri Lanka, with the two-match series beginning on August 15 in Galle, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.
After Sri Lanka, India face New Zealand before hosting Australia in a massive five-Test series.
Why India Are Still in the Race
India's current position does not tell the entire story.
The WTC uses a Points Percentage (PCT) system rather than simply counting points. A win is worth 12 points, a draw four points and a tie six points.
That means India can still make a significant jump if they start winning consistently.
The biggest opportunity could be the five-Test series against Australia. Winning that series convincingly could give India the momentum and points percentage required to challenge for a top-two position.
The Sri Lanka Series Is Crucial
India cannot afford to drop many points in Sri Lanka.
A 2-0 victory would be an ideal start to the remaining phase of the campaign and could immediately improve India's position.
However, anything less than a series win would put additional pressure on the team heading into the New Zealand tour and the Australia series.
Australia Could Decide India’s Fate
The five-Test series against Australia could ultimately determine whether India qualify for the WTC Final.
Australia are currently the team to beat, sitting at the top of the standings with an impressive 87.50% points percentage.
India will have home advantage, but Australia have already demonstrated remarkable consistency in this WTC cycle.
If India can win three or four Tests against Australia, their chances of finishing inside the top two could increase dramatically.
How Many Wins Does India Need?
There is no fixed qualification percentage because India's final position will also depend on the results of Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
However, India will likely need a very strong finish.
With nine Tests remaining, something close to seven wins would put India in a much stronger position. Even six wins could keep the qualification race alive, but India would then need favourable results from other contenders as well.
The margin for error is therefore extremely small.
India’s Biggest Challenge
India's biggest problem is not simply their current fifth-place position. It is the number of teams competing for the same two spots.
Australia are currently leading the race, while South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh are also in contention. The ICC has confirmed that nine teams are competing in the WTC cycle, with only the top two reaching the final.
This makes every Test from this point forward extremely important.
Can India Reach the 2027 WTC Final?
Yes — India absolutely still have a chance.
But they can no longer afford a poor run of results.
A strong 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka, followed by victories in New Zealand and a dominant performance against Australia, could completely change the picture.
India have already reached the WTC Final twice, in 2021 and 2023, but are yet to win the championship. The 2027 Final at The Oval in London, scheduled for June 9–13, could provide India with another opportunity to finally claim the WTC title.

Win more. Drop fewer points. Hope the teams above them slip.
