Hockey World Cup 2026: India Men and Women Both Face Semifinal Deciders

 Both of India's hockey teams find themselves at defining moments in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, with the men chasing a must-win result and the women staring down a virtual semifinal decider.

Men: India Must Beat Argentina to Stay Alive

India's men suffered a tough 3-1 defeat to hosts Netherlands in their second-round clash at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen. The first half was a tense, goalless affair, with India's defense holding firm against the dangerous Dutch attack. But the Netherlands broke through in the third quarter through Duco Telgenkamp, before Tjep Hoedemakers doubled the lead soon after. Captain Harmanpreet Singh pulled one back almost immediately, but India couldn't complete the fightback.

The result leaves India's semifinal hopes alive, but only just. With the Netherlands now needing just a draw against England to confirm top spot in Pool E, India face a demanding equation heading into their final second-round match on August 24: beat Argentina, and beat them by at least a two-goal margin, to have a realistic shot at the semifinals with also hoping Netherlands to beat England.

Women: A Virtual Decider Against Australia

India's women face a similarly high-stakes situation. The Netherlands already secured their semifinal spot on Day 1 of the second round with a 2-0 win over India, leaving the remaining qualification spot from the pool wide open between India, Australia, and China, who drew 1-1 to keep their own hopes alive.



India now face Australia on August 23 in what has effectively become a decider for the second semifinal berth. India's group stage form has shown real promise — a hard-fought 2-2 draw against China followed by a dominant 6-1 win over South Africa, with goals from Navneet Kaur, Sunelita Toppo, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami, and Sakshi Rana. That attacking depth will need to show up again against a strong Australian side.

The Bigger Picture

With both Indian teams needing big results in quick succession, the next few days will go a long way in deciding whether India's World Cup campaign continues into the knockout stages on both the men's and women's sides.

The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 is one of the biggest events on the hockey calendar this year, with both the Men's and Women's tournaments jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands , running from August 14 to 30.
