India's singles challenge at the BWF World Championships came to an end on a difficult Thursday, with both remaining stars falling in the pre-quarterfinals.

Sindhu's Historic Bid Ends

PV Sindhu's pursuit of an unprecedented sixth World Championships medal fell just short, as the two-time Olympic medallist lost a tense three-game battle to China's third seed Wang Zhi Yi, going down 11-21, 21-15, 17-21. Notably, Zhi Yi was battling severe cramps in both legs through the match, and Sindhu pushed her right to the brink before the Chinese shuttler held on. Sindhu later reflected that a little more patience in the closing stages might have changed the outcome.

Ayush Shetty's Dream Run Comes to an End

Fresh off his stunning first-round upset over world No. 1 and defending champion Shi Yuqi, Ayush Shetty's remarkable tournament ended in straight games against Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, losing 19-21, 11-21. The world No. 12 Farhan proved too strong for the 21-year-old, extending his head-to-head record over Shetty to 5-1 in their eight career meetings. Even with the defeat, Shetty's run — capped by that historic win over Shi Yuqi — will be remembered as one of the standout Indian stories of this home World Championships.


India's Singles Campaign Complete

With Lakshya Sen having already exited on Wednesday, Thursday's back-to-back losses from Sindhu and Shetty mean India's challenge in both men's and women's singles is now over for this edition of the World Championships.

Doubles Keep India's Hopes Alive

The good news for India comes from the doubles categories, where Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand marched into the quarterfinals, now just one win away from a medal. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with the mixed doubles pair, also remain in contention as the tournament heads deeper into its knockout stages.

The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 is one of the biggest events on the hockey calendar this year, with both the Men's and Women's tournaments jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands , running from August 14 to 30.
