India Knocked Out of Hockey World Cup After 3-5 Defeat to Argentina

India's men's hockey campaign at the World Cup 2026 has ended in heartbreak, going down 3-5 to Argentina in a must-win Pool E encounter in Amstelveen.

A Tough Equation That Slipped Away

India needed a win by at least two goals to have any chance of advancing, with their qualification hopes also depending on the Netherlands beating England by a big margin in the other Pool E fixture. In the end, India couldn't even secure the win itself, let alone by the required margin, as Argentina's superior recent form over India proved decisive once again.





A Long Wait Continues

The result extends a painful statistic for Indian hockey — their wait for a men's World Cup podium finish now stretches to 51 years. India's only World Cup title came back in 1975, when they beat Pakistan 2-1 in the final in Kuala Lumpur, and they haven't returned to the podium since, despite medaling in each of the tournament's first three editions.

Defensive Frailties the Story of the Campaign

India conceded 16 goals across their five matches at this World Cup, and those defensive lapses ultimately proved too costly against elite opposition. It's a pattern that head coach Craig Fulton and the team will need to address heading into the next major assignment.

A Difficult Week for Indian Hockey

The defeat completes a tough few days for Indian hockey overall — the women's team were also eliminated on Sunday after a heartbreaking goalless draw with Australia, meaning both Indian teams' World Cup campaigns are now over.

What's Next

India will now play Belgium in the classification match for seventh and eighth place, before attention shifts to the Asian Games, beginning next month in Japan's Aichi-Nagoya.
